DNREC’s DuPont Nature Center to host  Fish-n-Fun Day for families on July 19 in Slaughter Beach

SLAUGHTER BEACH (July 15, 2015) – The DuPont Nature Center at Mispillion Harbor Reserve, a DNREC Division of Fish & Wildlife facility, will hold its Family Fish-n-Fun Day on Sunday, July 19 at the Slaughter Beach Pavilion. Instructors will be on hand throughout the day to teach families surf fishing on the beach, and all are welcome to stop by between 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. to participate. The program is offered free of charge.

Participants will learn about the saltwater ecosystem, how to identify fish, fish anatomy, ethical fishing skills and fishing tackle and equipment through hands-on activities with nature center staff, interns and volunteers. Also on hand will be a Fish & Wildlife Natural Resources Police officer, who will talk with participants about Delaware fishing regulations and boating safety. Activities will include knot-tying, baiting hooks and casting practice. Fishing gear and other materials will be provided.

Participants should pack lunch, snacks and beverages (no glass containers), sunscreen and insect repellant, and wear outdoor clothing, including beach-appropriate shoes and a hat. Activities will be held at the pavilion next to the Slaughter Beach Fire Hall, with fishing along the Slaughter Beach shoreline.

A Delaware recreational fishing license is required for participants age 16 and older; a fishing license is not required for those younger than 16 and for Delaware residents age 65 and older. Delaware fishing licenses are sold online, at the licensing office in DNREC’s Richardson & Robbins Building, 89 Kings Highway, Dover, and by license agents statewide. To find a participating agent or to purchase a license online, visit Delaware Licenses.
